GCC’s Radiography Program Receives Accreditation

Share

Gateway Community College’s Radiography Program has earned full continuing accreditation from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

JRCERT promotes excellence in education and elevates quality and safety of patient care through the accreditation of educational programs in radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance, and medical dosimetry. The JRCERT is the only agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for the accreditation of traditional and distance delivery educational programs in radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance, and medical dosimetry.

GCC’s associate degree Radiography Program prepares students for employment as entry-level radiographers in hospitals, outpatient facilities, medical offices, community health agencies, or industrial concerns where radiation is used for quality control.

GCC’s Allied Health Department offers programs in four areas of radiologic technology: radiography, diagnostic medical sonography, nuclear medicine technology and radiation therapy. The field of radiologic technology includes some of the most rapidly advancing careers in modern medicine. Recent changes in technology, the ever-increasing use of highly sophisticated equipment, and the expansion of radiology departments throughout the nation have created a large demand for individuals educated in this field.

Students in GCC’s Radiography Program benefit from state-of-the-art equipment in the college’s new X-ray lab on its North Haven campus and opportunities to do clinical rotations in local heath care affiliates that include Bridgeport Hospital, Griffin Hospital, Yale-New Haven Hospital, VA-New England Healthcare Systems Connecticut Division and Guilford Radiology.

GCC’s Radiologic Technology Program Director Julie A. Austin said the JRCERT accreditation was based on the submission of a five-year interim report and the college’s next self study and site visit from JRCERT will be in 2013.
