GCC Celebrates 26th Commencement at Webster Bank Arena

As in previous years, the most popular major in the Class of 2018 remains Liberal Arts & Sciences, which prepares  students for transfer to four-year institutions. Other popular fields of study include Business, Transportation and Engineering Technologies, Human Services, General Studies, Allied Health and Health, Nursing, Computer Science and Early Childhood Education. 
 
"This 26th Commencement marks the end of another successful year for Gateway," said Paul Broadie II, president of Gateway Community College. "I am so proud of our graduates and commend them all on staying the course, completing their studies and working hard to earn their degrees and certificates. They are an inspiration to those who are still working toward their goals."

An honorary Associate Degree in Science was conferred upon Larry Bingaman, president and chief executive officer of the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA). Bingaman leads with a keen focus on sustainable and conscientious business practices and is deeply involved in the New Haven community. He led the charge to establish the first joint-degree program in Public Utilities Management with Gateway and Southern Connecticut State University, and sponsored a Chemistry lab at GCC. Bingaman is immediate past chairman of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and serves on the President’s Executive Council for Gateway Community College, as well as the Business Advisory Council for Southern Connecticut State University. Bingaman is a 2016 inductee to Gateway Community College Foundation Hall of Fame for his commitment, dedication and support of higher education and social change.

GCC Alumnus and GCC adjunct professor, Edwin A. Martinez, delivered the keynote address. Martinez is a Manufacturing Technology  Manager and Senior Manufacturing Engineer at DRT Power Systems. He earned an Associate Degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology as well as certificates in Quality Control and Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) from GCC. Martinez continued his education at Central Connecticut State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in the same discipline. In 2015, he joined the GCC faculty as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology, teaching manufacturing and engineering related courses. Martinez serves as Vice Chair of the Executive Board of the Community Action Agency of New Haven (CAANH), and is a founding member and Vice Chair of the executive board of Puerto Ricans United, Inc. (PRU), a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower the Puerto Rican community through promoting education and social advancement.
