Gateway Students Get the ‘Inside Track’ From Greater New Haven Transit District

Share

Nineteen students in the Transportation Career Trainee program visited April 9 the Greater New Haven Transit District   (GNHTD) for a tour of the repair and maintenance facilities and a demonstration of the hydrogen-powered passenger bus. The Transportation Career Trainee program, offered by the GREAT Center (Gateway's Resource, Education and Training Center) provides career exploration in the transportation sector while students earn an industry-recognized safety credential and enhance skills essential to the transportation sector of the economy.

GNHTD staff was on-site to provide information on various job opportunities and details of what a “day in the life” of repair and maintenance looks like. A goal of the Gateway CC Transportation Career Trainee Program is to seek internship opportunities in the real world of transportation. Several students will be vetted for such an opportunity at the GNHTD.

“The Greater New Haven area is abundant with opportunities for interesting and unique experiences with fellow community members," said Donna Carter, executive director, GNHTD. "We feel truly special being able to provide real world information to those who are truly interested in having a career in transportation. We are delighted that Gateway Community College has offered to involve us with their students and we look forward to taking this collaboration to the next level.”

Through partnerships with the GNHTD, The Great Center is providing mutually beneficial opportunities to students and the community. “The transportation sector needs skilled workers in maintenance, repair and operation jobs working on the roads, rails, buses trains and engines that keep us all moving,” stated Ann Marie Harrison, coordinator of Workforce Development and Continuing Education programs at Gateway. She continued, “Many thanks to the Greater New Haven Transit District for making this important contribution to our program.”
