GCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society to Hold Additional Orientation Session and Bake Sale This Month

Share

For those students who may have missed the March 4 orientations, Gateway Community College’s (GCC) Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will hold another orientation on March 9, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in S109. Students who have completed 12 hours of course work while achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher are encouraged to attend.

The mission of the Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage the academic success of students attending two-year colleges. Members have the opportunity to participate in honors and leadership programs, community service and fellowship programming.

Currently, Gateway's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has 200 members and 2,000 alumni members. Susan Swirsky, of GCC’s department of Development and Community Partnerships, and Richard B. Halkyard Jr., professor of Computer Engineering Technology, co-advise the Alpha Xi Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

"Phi Theta Kappa recognizes a student’s academic success and makes them eligible for scholarships,” Halkyard said, adding that their participation is noted on their transcript. “In addition, Phi Theta Kappa offers students a chance to serve their school and community through various programs, work together as a group and to take leadership positions in an academically-oriented organization.”

Phi Theta Kappa members will hold a bake sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Fairway on March 21. Proceeds from the bake sale will benefit the honor society’s programs.
