Gateway Community College student Symphany Joseph was recognized as Best All-Around Student at the college’s 21 st commencement on May 24. Joseph was chosen for her dedication to the college, her exceptional service on multiple college committees and her excellent leadership skills.

Joseph first became involved in campus life through the Black Student Association. Her positive example as an Orientation Leader set her apart, so much so that she was named Lead New Student Orientation Leader for several semesters. During her tenure as Orientation Leader she mentored as many as 53 students during one semester.

In addition to serving as an orientation leader, Joseph assumed leadership roles as the Campus Activities Chairperson, being elected to represent the college on the Student Advisory Committee to the Board of Regents, and serving as Vice president to the Black Student Association, Treasurer to the Athletic Club, the Student Government Association (SGA) Representative to the Communications Committee and to the Campus Tours Committee. For the academic years 2012-2013 she was elected President to the SGA.

In her many roles, Joseph often served as a mentor and advocate for her peers. As the GCC representative to the Student Advisory Committee to the Board of Regents, she advocated for the 96,000 students that ConnSCU represents; in this capacity she gave generously of her time and served as a voice for those who were underrepresented.

Outside of Gateway, Joseph volunteered at the Community Soup Kitchen and with the Ronald McDonald House. She currently interns at WYBC 94.3 and works in the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Programs. A major in Liberal Arts and Sciences, she will attend Southern this fall and continue her education in communications.
