Two former Gateway Community College basketball players, Chazz McCarter and Chantel Davis, will be inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame on June 22, the first time junior college players have ever been inducted.

John Stewart, GCC’s athletic director and men’s basketball head coach, said he is thrilled the two have been named to the Hall of Fame. McCarter played for GCC from 2008-2010 and Davis played for the women’s team from 2004-2006.

McCarter transferred to GCC from Central Connecticut State University and had a stellar career here. In the 2008-2009 season, he was voted to the All-New England Team. That season he averaged 24.8 points a game, 9.6 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 5 steals.

In the 2010 season, Gateway placed second in the Region 21 Division Three Men’s Basketball Championship. That season he averaged 21.9 points, 9.5 rebounds, five assists and four steals. McCarter was voted to the All- New England First Team for the second time in 2010 and he was named to the All- American First team. He scored over 1,000 points in two seasons and once scored 63 points in a game while at Hillhouse High School. He graduated in 2010 and enrolled at Southern Connecticut State University. 

Chantel Davis transferred to GCC from Augustine’s College. In her second season, 2005-2006, the Gateway women’s basketball team won the Region 21 Division 3 Championship. Davis was voted to the All-New England First Team in 2005-2006. That year she averaged 12.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.4 steals per game. She graduated in 2066 and enrolled at Albertus Magnus College.

The upcoming inductions are just some of the good news coming from courtside at GCC, as Jerome Parkins played in National Junior College Athletic Association’s All-Star Game. He scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds and was named MVP of the game. Gateway men’s basketball team finished the season with an 11-9 record. Due to eligibility issues that arose mid-semester, Gateway was ineligible for the finals tournament. 

The Gateway women’s basketball team finished with 7-7 record. The women’s team made it to the Regional Play-down and lost to Quinsigamond 40 to 39. Hayley Torres scored 16 points and had 18 rebounds. Kaylah Gore scored 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds and Alaina Holloman had 9 points and 9 rebounds. Torres was named to the second team All-New England team and Alaina Holloman received Honorable Mention.
